Missouri, a suburb of the
City of
St. Louis, is located in northern
St. Louis
County. Florissant is one of the oldest
settlements in the state of Missouri. The first
civil government was formed in 1786. Spanish
archives show 40 people and seven plantations in
Florissant, MO at the time of the 1787 census.

Founded in 1769, St. Charles, MO was the first
European settlement along the
Missouri River.
Louis Blanchette, a French Canadian fur trader
called the settlement Les Petit Cotes, French for
the Little Hills. In 1791, the name was changed to
San Carlos in honor of
King Charles IV of Spain. In 1804, the
settlement's name was changed once again to St.
Charles, and in 1809 St. Charles was incorporated as
a village. Other early settlements were established
nearby at St. Louis and
Florissant.
St. Charles County, MO
St.
Charles is the county seat of St. Charles
County, Missouri. It lies just northwest of
St.
Louis, and Belleville on the Missouri River. St.
Charles, the first state capital of Missouri, was
the starting point for the famous
Lewis and
Clark Expedition. St. Charles is a charter city
(a city in which the governing system is defined by
the city's own charter document rather than by state
or national laws).

St. Louis was founded in 1763 by colonial French
traders on land just south of the confluence of the
Missouri and
Mississippi Rivers. They named St. Louis in
honor of
King Louis IX of France. After the French were
defeated in the Seven Years War, St. Louis became
part of the Spanish Empire. In 1800, the land was
secretly returned to France, and
Napoleon Bonaparte sold it to the United States
in 1803. On August 22, 1876, the City of St. Louis
seceded from St. Louis County and become an
independent city.

side of the state. It is the heart of the
St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The
county was created on October 1, 1812 as one of the
first five counties in the
Missouri Territory, before Missouri achieved
statehood. The county is home to the largest labor
force in the region, as well the largest share of
the region’s housing. With more than
600,000 jobs, St. Louis County is the economic
and employment hub of the region. Nearly half of the
region’s employment positions are based in St. Louis
County.

Charles County. This suburban community is
situated just north of the Missouri River and west
of the Mississippi River, hence the term "Mid River"
that is used to describe the area. St. Peters is a
very family-oriented community just 20 minutes from
St. Louis. It offers a slower-paced lifestyle with
low crime in well-kept neighborhoods that enjoy easy
access to the attractions and nightlife of
St. Louis.
University City, MO
University City,
Missouri, a
5.9-square-mile suburb of
St.
Louis, is located in
St. Louis
County. University City was founded by publisher
Edward Gardner Lewis. In the late 1800s, the
area that is now University City, Missouri was
primarily farms and small farming communities until
Lewis moved his publishing business to the area in
1903. The
buildings built by Lewis, including the current
City Hall, were used for publishing magazines such
as Woman's Magazine and Woman's Farm Journal.
University City was incorporated in 1906 and Lewis
served as its first mayor.

Alton, IL
Alton,
Illinois is a
historic Mississippi River town located in
Madison
County. Most of Alton's 16.6-square miles are
located on bluffs overlooking the
Mississippi River Valley. Alton, IL is a popular
tourist retreat. Alton's location and its history
make it a popular destination for
antique shopping, touring historic areas, and
enjoying the scenic, natural beauty of the area.
Alton is known as "the wedding capital of the
Midwest" and has become a popular destination for
weddings and honeymoons. Alton is only 18 miles from
St. Louis, MO, making wedding travel very
convenient.
Belleville, IL
Belleville,
Illinois, the
"beautiful city," is a 19-square-mile city in
St. Clair
County. Historic Belleville is one of the oldest
cities in the state of Illinois. It was first
settled after the Revolutionary War by veterans who
received land grants, and later by German
immigrants. Belleville was chartered in 1814 and
grew steadily through the years. Belleville has such
a rich German heritage that its
sister city is
Paderborn,
Germany. Belleville Sister Cities, Inc. is an
organization which is dedicated to maintaining
contact with Paderborn as well as hosting a yearly
German dinner and dances, complete with German
music.
Madison County, IL
Madison County, IL was established on September 14,
1812 from portions of
Randolph County and
St. Clair County. Madison County was formed before
Illinois became a state; at that time, the area was
part of the Illinois Territory. Madison was named in
honor of
President James Madison. By the late 1800s,
Madison County, IL had a large working class
population with steel mills and oil refineries as
the major industries.
St. Clair County, IL
St. Clair County, IL was named for Major General
Arthur St. Clair, governor of the
Northwest Territory. St. Clair was responsible
for organizing the county in 1790. St. Clair County,
originally established in the Northwest Territory,
covered two-thirds of present day Illinois.
